Bonaprene is Licensed to Manufacture MOCA cured Polyurethane until 2029

We are very pleased to announce that on the 11th October 2024 Bonaprene Products was granted authorisation by the Government (DERFRA) for the continued use of the curative MOCA in Bonaprene’s manufacture of polyurethane components and roll coverings.

Bonaprene is Licensed to Manufacture MOCA cured Polyurethane until 2029

This means that Bonaprene can continue to offer the wide range of high performance TDI MOCA cured polyether polyurethane parts where tough and durable polyurethane is required. MOCA cured TDI polyurethane is resistant to high loads; hot water and large deflection while being able to be cast in very large volumes of up to 400KG.  Bonaprene has for decades; successfully used MOCA cured polyurethane for roll coverings in steel, paper and board mills and any other plant that needs the high load capabilities of MOCA cured polyurethane. Bonaprene have also made parts such as Heavy Fork Lift Truck Axle Damping Mounts, paper mill cyclones; ship mooring rolls; isostatic bags; off shore pipe umbilical retainers; street furniture, locomotive engine mounts, quarrying nip guards and scrapers.

Bonaprene Products offer hardnesses of MOCA cured polyurethane from 80° Shore A to 60° Shore D in a wide range of colours. TDI MOCA cured polyether polyurethane offers high load bearing capacity, good abrasion resistance; superior hot water resistance and high tensile strength and rebound resilience. MOCA cured polyurethanes are far superior in physical properties and processing parameters to polyurethanes cured using alternatives to MOCA such as Ether Cure. Moca cured polyurethane continues to be the preferred choice across the UK and Europe.

Bonaprene Products Limited have been processing Mboca [2,2’-dichloro-4,4’-methylenedianiline (MOCA)] cured TDI [Toluene diisocyanate] ether polyurethane elastomers since the 1980s in our factory in Wrexham.  The Health and Safety Executive will now only allow authorised Companies to use MOCA in the Polyurethane Manufacturing Industry.

On 17th June 2022, Bonaprene Products (the Applicant) submitted an application for authorisation (the ‘Application’ reference AFA015-01) to the Health and Safety Executive (the ‘Agency’) for the use of MOCA as a reactant in the manufacture of cast polyurethanes at an industrial site (Wrexham). On 11th October 2023, the Agency sent its Opinion (the ‘Opinion’) to the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, and Scottish and Welsh Ministers. On the 11th October 2024 Authorisation was granted to the Applicant in accordance with Article 60(4) of UK REACH for the following use of MOCA: a. As a reactant in the manufacture of cast polyurethanes (PU) at an industrial site. The Authorisation number is UKREACH/24/23/0.
